Tips on How Spring Cleaning is Done in your Kitchen and your Food Supply

It’s time for spring cleaning your kitchen and your food supply!

Spring cleaning is the practice of thoroughly cleaning a house in the springtime. It was said that it originated from the Iranians practicing “khooneh tekouni” which means “shaking the house” just before the new year. Also, there’s another possibility that it came from the ancient Jewish practice of thoroughly cleansing the home in anticipation of the spring-time memorial feast of Passover. But whichever spring clean originally came from, now’s the perfect time to do it!

 Why spring cleaning is needed to be done? Is it improper to say that you’ve been lazy due to the cold winter season? Have you noticed that what’s left in your refrigerator are mostly unhealthy foods? Then it’s the perfect time to spring clean your kitchen and your food supply to have a  good start for the new season.

Let these following tips guide you to do spring cleaning, specifically on your kitchen, the most effective way.

Spring Cleaning Tip 1: Dusting

Take a look at your kitchen shelves, take everything out you’ve placed in it before you start dusting off the dust. Brush it with a feather duster. In order for you to reach narrow spots, use a dust brush or crevice tool on a vacuum. Now, deal with your books. You can also brush them with your feather duster and wipe their lids and spines with a clean cloth. Proceed to your refrigerator but first, turn off power at the circuit breaker or fuse box. Notice the coils at the bottom of your refrigerator, just under the grill? It’s a bit messy, right? Clean the coils using the crevice tool of a vacuum or a refrigerator coil brush. Next would be the top of your window casings, hidden corners, or other places in your kitchen that you find it difficult to clean. Avoid using dusting sprays, instead use your strong tool, vacuum.

 Spring Cleaning Tip 2: Polishing and Re-Sealing

Do polishing to your metal doors and window hardware. Use liquid polishes for tarnished surfaces but creams and pastes work better for greatly tarnished surfaces. If grout lines needed re-sealing, it’d be better to have them done. Apply cement-based material between wall, floor, and countertop tiles using a small foam brush.

 Spring Cleaning Tip 3: Wiping

After removing dust using your vacuum, deal with the stains or surface grimes mostly on your cooking zone or near your sink. Use a solvent-free degreaser but first, test it if it doesn’t mark the surface. For kitchen blinds, wipe them using a damp cloth with a solution of warm water and a mild dishwashing liquid which, safe for metal or vinyl.

Spring Cleaning Tip 4: Washing

Scrub your kitchen screens using a brush with a solution of warm water and a mild dishwashing liquid then rinse thoroughly. Put off your draperies and curtains to wash them but first check their labels if they are machine or hand-washed.

Spring Cleaning Tip 5: Waxing

Before waxing, wipe first the furniture surfaces using a damp cloth with water and mild dishwashing liquid. Then, you can now apply paste wax. Let the wax dry and buff with a clean cloth. If you have linoleum or vinyl kitchen floors that have lost their shine, you can wax them with a polish designed for them.

Spring Cleaning Tip 6: Organizing, specifically the insides of your Refrigerator

Before anything else, turn off power at the circuit breaker or fuse box. Defrost your refrigerator’s freezer, remove out all of its content and wipe the insides with a solution of 2 tablespoons baking soda per a quart of water.

Notice the ice crystals forming on the food or in the packaging you’ve taken out from the freezer? Get rid of ‘em. Why? Because anything with ice crystals formed- freezer burn- will taste worse and the nutrients are already lost. This is similar to anything that contains healthy fats with the likes of nuts, nut butter, and fish oil in any form.

Let’s take a look at your kitchen cupboard. Found items packed with sugar, sodium, and preservatives? Toss them out. Settle pistachios in it (a piece only contains 3 calories), enabling you to consume less since you’ll be shelling it, slowing down your eating. Find a space in it for oatmeal flavored with cinnamon and fruit. Load it up with whole grains such as quinoa, brown rice, and wheat pasta. Also, include low-sodium beans for protein and fiber, and cans of fatty fish like tuna, sardines, and salmon for omega-3.

An effective way to consume food items ideally is to place them basing on their nutrition density. In your pantry or fridge, at eye-level, front and center, put your more healthy foods, and at the back are your favorite treats.
